ABOUT FIREPROOF BATTERIES
Twenty-five years ago in Tamil Nadu I first heard the phrase “thi kuli” (தீ குளி) — literally fire bath.
Naïvely, I imagined a folk ritual involving embers and prayers. Reality was darker: poor men would soak themselves in kerosene, strike a match and die in front of a politician’s house, their families handed a few thousand rupees for the “sacrifice.” A gruesome, preventable bargain where one person burned so someone else could gain.
Fast-forward to 2025 and we are repeating a technological version of thi kuli. E-bike riders charge cheap packs in kitchens; apartment blocks, buses and 100-MWh storage farms go up in flames.
We pay the cost in insurance, recalls, medical bills and lost trust — all because our safety reflex runs in milliseconds while thermal runaway ignites in micro-seconds.
We are, in effect, offering battery packs for immolation so that the world can keep enjoying thin laptops and long-range EVs.
The purpose of this book is to end that bargain.
